Imagine you have been on a journey for over twenty years now, your quest is to destroy unstable planets, and, except for three other mad guys, you are alone in outer space. Now you are onboard the scout ship DARK STAR, on its never-ending mission to cruise the galaxies and seek out new planets to blow up with its intelligent high-tech bombs.
Over 30 years ago John Carpenter and Dan OBannon created that cinematic masterpiece which reveals the deepest abyss of human psyche, shows four men slowly becoming insane, lost in loneliness, depression, anger, and despair, yet with a glimmer of hope remaining. To call DARK STAR an ordinary sci-fi film gives a totally incomplete image of that work of genius; in fact I would call it an intelligent, serious, action packed, dark, discouraging and at the same time even hilarious motion picture.
John Carpenter has not reached so much popularity from DARK STAR alone, though; he also directed films such as Vampires (1998), Ghost of Mars (2001) and the famous Halloween series (1978 – 2005). Dan OBannon, who wrote the screenplay for Dark Star, has also created the story and written the script for Alien (1979) that takes account of many details from DARK STAR, not at least the alien creature itself.
Back in 1973 when John Carpenter and Dan OBannon were students at the University of Southern California, they created DARK STAR as a project for school. Yet, after producer Jack H. Harris had seen the film they made, he was so enthusiastic about it, he decided to put a lot of money into the project to add new scenes, extend the run time to about 83 minutes, and then get the movie into the cinemas. Now DARK STAR has become one of the best motion pictures the world has ever seen.
